Together Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Relationship.

Consider this a test for partners in committed relationships who are fans of the horror genre: Settle in with your significant other and view Together. The critically acclaimed 2025 movie recently had its streaming debut on Hulu. At first glance, it might appear like conventional biological terror, but within Together resides a intense contemplation about the ways we decide to love each other.

A Directorial Debut Investigating Partnership Complexities

Together marks the debut feature-length film for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It showcases Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Millie and Tim, partners that have stayed together for a decade. Having wed in actuality in 2017, the actors infuse a special spark to their portrayals, skillfully embodying both the good and bad of a long-term relationship.

The story begins when Tim and Millie move from the big city to the countryside for her career. A somewhat stereotypical plot device, of course, but that’s largely where the conventions cease. Together evolves into as much a psychological exploration of the pair’s relationship as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

A Paranormal Spark

While trekking near their rural residence, a storm hits, and the two discover an underground cave. After being trapped overnight there and managing to escape, a strange force starts to affect the pair. This force creates a otherworldly bond between them that goes far beyond typical partnership.

The whole movie is a slow burn of scares, interspersing moments of hallucinatory nightmares, unsettling (but tastefully done) physical transformations, and authentically humorous interactions (sometimes in the middle of something horrific). The director orchestrates these parts expertly and presents them in a slowly mounting aura of dread.

Complex Characterizations

A large part of Together is exclusively Brie and Franco, and they skillfully illustrate manifold depths to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Millie's sense of self and emotional bond is deteriorating due to a lack of intimacy. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his unwillingness to focus on anything other than his struggling artistic pursuits gradually emerges.

In contrast, Tim's character senses confinement and isolated by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve moved to the country and far away from his network of friends. He dreads the concept of totally forfeiting his personal autonomy in Millie. This fear is further exacerbated by the reality he can’t drive and relies on Millie for transportation.

The film's most intelligent aspect in Together avoids making Tim or Millie the clear bad guy.

The couple face the kind of problems that are inherent in any relationship over a long period. Fundamentally, they continue to care for each other. They find humor with each other, offer support, and are vulnerable at times. But beneath it all, there’s an unavoidable undercurrent of doubt about their future together.

Allegory and Meaning

While the supernatural forces in Together symbolize these fears of unhealthy attachment and fully committing to a partner, the symbolism avoids being clumsy or self-important. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments provide a brilliant analogue to the character-driven drama. Both the supernatural and the personal serve the other in a mutually beneficial way.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s conclusion, which won’t be spoiled here, has created disagreement on the movie's final takeaway about enmeshed dynamics. Reports indicate that unattached audience members have interpreted the film as a strong argument for remaining unattached. Conversely, certain partners experiencing tension found that the film actually helped them reconcile.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own interpretation could potentially serve as a great barometer of how you view relationships. Will the finale sow feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a positive outlook on love? Will you see yourself in one of the characters and feel frustration, or simply turn to your other half and utter, “I’d do that for you”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an experiment you can experience at this very moment.

Together is available to watch on Hulu as of this moment.
